Photographers turn butterflies’ wings into Amazing Bloom Photos
As a pioneer, Seb Janiak desires to observe the world and to also apply his artistic skills in order to reshape it fully. His work opens other perspectives and meanings in nature and it’s often thought as a provoking work for the viewers.
In the Eighties, Seb was a matte painter with incredible revolutionary techniques and also with a very original perspective of nature and the world itself. When he started shooting photos, he became very popular and quickly achieved fame. He then started to create images in which he shaped and also described the times he lived in. Once he started working with video a lot of famous musicians of that time, such as Janet Jackson and Robbie Williams, asked him if he could direct their music videos.
Seb Janiak is a French photographer from Paris that depicts the wings of any insect like they are petals of blooming flowers, which is not only incredibly stunning but also interesting to see. He has deep interest on the mechanism of mimicry in nature, which is when an organism develops its colours, textures and also appendages to mimic its surroundings for their own survival. This is done without any conscious of it and is also an evolutionary tool that many species of animals still have, to stop predators from catching them. He based his whole series of photos in this process of mimicking the surroundings, just to assure protection.
In order to create his photos, Janiek goes to several antique and also taxidermist stores to find examples of wings. Once he finds the most beautiful, he takes photos in high resolution to capture all of the smallest details and to allow him to print the photos without removing any quality. Once he has all the photos needed and wanted, they are edited on a computer and put together in flower-like shapes. In the end, he outputs those edited images printing them in chromogenic that measure about 6 feet square. There is no digital manipulation and no special effects of any kind in these pictures, but it’s a long process. Although most people don’t believe this, what he actually does to accomplish those final photos is, in fact, very simple: he uses analog photography in combination with photomontage and also superimposition, which creates the layered effect of the wings.
Mimesis, a Greek word for imitation, is the name of the photomontage Janiak has been working on. With 22 pieces, this series was exhibited last September for the first time in the world known Photo Shanghai art fair. In early 2015, the series won an IPA Lucy award. The images are absolutely breath-taking and won’t disappoint the viewers.
The photographer’s work is a long process and, of course, it takes a lot of time to complete one photo since it’s a very complex job. However, the results can be incredible and, the best of this series is that it’s an ongoing series, so Seb Janiak will probably take more photos and edit them and, as soon as possible, we will be able to see them.
